  • Tropics Outlook October 10

    Hello everyone! This is your tropics outlook on October 10 for the Northern Hemisphere. North Atlantic Invest 92L has a 80% chance to develop into a tropical depression within the next 2 days and will remain out to sea. Invest 93L initially had a 30% chance to form into a tropical depression in the Bay of Campeche. However, it's down to 10% because it lacks a well-defined center and has disorganized convection. Eastern Pacific Hurricane Lidia is rapidly intensifying as it heads east-northeast toward west-central Mexico. Lidia is currently a high-end Category 3 hurricane with sustained winds of 125 mph (205 km/h) and will make landfall in the western part of the state of Jalisco, Mexico. Hurricane and tropical storm warnings remain. Dangerous storm surge and life-threatening hurricane-force winds are expected. Western Pacific Typhoon Bolaven is moving away from the Mariana Islands and is explosively intensifying. Bolaven is now a Category 4 typhoon with sustained winds of 150 mph (240 km/h). The typhoon will become a Category 5 typhoon tomorrow as it heads northwest and then northeast later this week away from land.

  • Tropics Outlook October 5

    North Atlantic Tropical storm Philippe is heading north toward Bermuda and slightly strengthens with sustained winds of 50 mph (50 mph). Heavy rainfall remains the primary threat from parts of the mid-Atlantic to the Northeast for tomorrow and Saturday. An area of interest in the eastern Atlantic has a 30% chance to develop into a tropical depression within the next 7 days. Eastern Pacific Lidia is gradually organizing and is up to 65 mph (100 km/h). Some strengthening is expected as the storm heads west and then turn northeast next week. Invest 99E has a 80% chance to become a tropical depression within the next 7 days. People in southern Mexico should monitor the disturbance for potential impacts. An area of interest in the central part of the EPAC remains disorganized and only has a 10% to form within the next 2 days. Western Pacific Typhoon Koinu made landfall in Cape Eluanbi, Taiwan yesterday as a high-end Category 3 typhoon with winds of 125 mph (200 km/h). After some weakening to a high-end Category 1 typhoon today due to land interaction with Taiwan, Koinu has unexpectedly rebounded and is now a Category 2 typhoon as it heads west in the South China Sea. Invest 97W has a 30% chance to form into a tropical depression within the next 7 days. Invest 98W has a 80% chance to form into a tropical depression within the next 7 days as the disturbance heads generally west.

  • Tropics Outlook October 4

    North Atlantic Philippe is finally heading north as a minimal tropical storm. The system is expected to bring impacts, such as heavy rain and gusty winds, to several areas like Bermuda. A tropical storm warning is in effect for Bermuda. Eastern Pacific Tropical storm Lidia continues to face easterly wind shear with winds of 50 mph (85 km/h). Lidia is expected to gradually strengthen for the next 5 days as it stays out to sea and heads north-northwest. The area of interest south of Guatemala has a 80% chance to develop into a tropical depression within the next 7 days. Another area of interest in the central part of the Eastern pacific has a 10% chance to form into a tropical depression within the next 2 days. By the weekend, conditions will be unfavorable for further development. Western Pacific Typhoon Koinu peaked earlier today as a Category 4 typhoon with winds of 140 mph (225 km/h). Also, buoys off the coast of Taiwan have recorded very high winds and gusts. Koinu is nearing landfall on Taiwan's southern tip and heavy rain, storm surge, and strong winds are expected in that general area. Invest 97W is located near the Mariana Islands and has a 10% chance to become a tropical depression within the next 7 days. Invest 98W has a 50% chance to develop into a tropical depression within the next 7 days.

    Hello everyone! This is your mid-week outlook for Chatham, NJ. Wednesday 10/4: Sunny and hot 🌞. Daytime high of 85°F and nighttime low of 52°F. Thursday 10/5: Partly cloudy skies ⛅. Daytime high of 78°F and nighttime low of 58°F. Friday 10/6: Intermittent showers followed by rain during the overnight hours 🌧️. Daytime high of 74°F and nighttime low of 63°F. Saturday 10/7: Rain in the morning followed by showers in the afternoon 🌧️. The daytime high should occur in the morning before temperatures decrease throughout the day from a cold front. Daytime high of 67°F and a nighttime low of 46°F. Concluding thoughts: Enjoy the warm temperatures for the next couple of days before cooler and rainy conditions arrive.

    Hello everyone! Here is the tropics outlook for October 2 which covers the Northern Hemisphere. North Atlantic Tropical storm Philippe is struggling against moderate wind shear and is maintaining its intensity at 50 mph (85 km/h). However, the system is making its closest approach to the Leeward Islands, with heavy rainfall remaining the primary threat. Tropical storm watches are in effect for Antigua & Barbuda. Rina degenerated to a remnant low yesterday and now it is almost gone. Eastern Pacific Invest 98E is quickly organizing and has a 90% chance of developing into a tropical depression within the next 2 days. Impacts on any land remain uncertain. An area of interest was marked south of Oaxaca, Mexico, and has a 60% chance of forming into a tropical depression within the next 7 days. Western Pacific Typhoon Koinu continues to rapidly intensify and is now a high-end Category 3 typhoon with sustained winds of 125 mph (200 km/h). The typhoon is heading northwest as shear increases and will impact southern Taiwan in about 2 days. Preparations should be underway for Taiwan. Invest 96W will not form into a tropical depression.

  • MAJOR Local Rain Update

    Hello everyone! We are ending the week with a washout. The amount of rain forecast for New Jersey and Long Island, New York, have significantly increased. Here is what you need to know. Showers are occurring for parts of New Jersey and western Long Island. Rain should become more widespread by Friday morning. Areas in northwestern NJ are expected to receive 2-3 inches of rain from Friday morning to Saturday morning. Areas in central and northeastern NJ are expected to receive at least 4 inches of rain, with locally higher amounts of >6 inches depending on where the rain bands set up. There is a slight risk for excessive rainfall for the majority of those areas. Some parts of northeastern and central NJ are under a moderate risk of excessive rainfall. Watch out for localized flooding or even extensive street flooding is possible. Streams and rivers may also flood their banks due to heavy rain.

  • Tropics Outlook September 28

    Hello everyone! Here is a tropics outlook on September 28 for the Northern Hemisphere. North Atlantic Tropical storm Philippe continues to become further disorganized due to a combination of dry air and wind shear. Despite the challenges in forecasting Philippe's future track, the storm should stay out to sea and not cause impacts for the Leeward Islands. Tropical storm Rina was named earlier today and gradual strengthening is expected early next week when shear decreases. The storm is expected to not impact land. Eastern Pacific The area of interest in the western part of this basin will not form. A new area of interest has a 20% chance to form into a tropical depression within the next 7 days. Western Pacific Invest 93W seems to be relocating its center underneath the deep convection as its old center dissipates. The disturbance has a 80% chance to become a tropical depression within the next 2 days and will continue to head west. North Indian Invest 99A has rapidly organized throughout the day and should become a tropical cyclone tomorrow. The disturbance is meandering northwest of Chicalim, India.

Daytime high 62°F and nighttime low 55°F. Saturday 9/30: Morning showers followed by overcast skies in the afternoon 🌧️. Daytime high 68°F and nighttime low 53°F. Concluding thoughts: Pleasant conditions for the next couple of days before rain affects our area on Friday.

    Hello everyone! Here is a tropics outlook on September 27 for the Northern Hemisphere. North Atlantic Tropical storm Philippe continues to struggle against dry air and strong wind shear. The storm has slightly weakened to sustained winds of 45 mph (75 km/h). Philippe is expected to head generally west and degenerate to a remnant low later this week. Convection is becoming more organized around Invest 91L and the disturbance has a 90% chance to become a tropical depression within the next 2 days. The system is probably going to stay out to sea and encounter problems with wind shear. Eastern Pacific The area of interest has a 30% chance to develop into a tropical depression within the next 7 days as the disturbance heads west and stays out to sea. Western Pacific The remnants of 13W continue to bring heavy rainfall across parts of Vietnam and Laos. 13W's remnants are expected to track west and eventually dissipate. Invest 93W was recently designated just west of the Mariana Islands and has a 30% chance to become a tropical depression within the next 7 days.

    Hello everyone! As the remnants of Ophelia slowly move away from the mid-Atlantic, here are some rainfall totals for the past 72 hours throughout Morris County, NJ. Chatham: 2.59 inches. Madison: 3.26 inches. Randolph Township: 3.33 inches. Mendham: 2.25 inches. Parsipanny: 3.11 inches. Mount Arlington: 3.09 inches. Long Hill Township: 3.08 inches. Succasunna: 3.1 inches. Califon: 2.99 inches. Basking Ridge: 3.28 inches. Morristown: 2.82 inches. Mine Hill Township: 3.27 inches. Denville Township: 2.07 inches. Harding Township: 2.63 inches. Morris Plains: 2.76 inches. Ironia: 2.76 inches. Morris Township: 2.78 inches. Stirling: 2.76 inches. Overall, several towns have recorded around 2 and 3 inches of rain. Gloomy conditions should clear out with sunshine later this week and daytime temperatures will rise back to the upper 60Fs and potentially the low 70Fs.
