Tropics Outlook October 5

North Atlantic

  • Tropical storm Philippe is heading north toward Bermuda and slightly strengthens with sustained winds of 50 mph (50 mph). Heavy rainfall remains the primary threat from parts of the mid-Atlantic to the Northeast for tomorrow and Saturday.

  • An area of interest in the eastern Atlantic has a 30% chance to develop into a tropical depression within the next 7 days.

Eastern Pacific

  • Lidia is gradually organizing and is up to 65 mph (100 km/h). Some strengthening is expected as the storm heads west and then turn northeast next week.

  • Invest 99E has a 80% chance to become a tropical depression within the next 7 days. People in southern Mexico should monitor the disturbance for potential impacts.

  • An area of interest in the central part of the EPAC remains disorganized and only has a 10% to form within the next 2 days.

Western Pacific

  • Typhoon Koinu made landfall in Cape Eluanbi, Taiwan yesterday as a high-end Category 3 typhoon with winds of 125 mph (200 km/h). After some weakening to a high-end Category 1 typhoon today due to land interaction with Taiwan, Koinu has unexpectedly rebounded and is now a Category 2 typhoon as it heads west in the South China Sea.

  • Invest 97W has a 30% chance to form into a tropical depression within the next 7 days.

  • Invest 98W has a 80% chance to form into a tropical depression within the next 7 days as the disturbance heads generally west.
